Going once, going twice, outta here!
Hard times in the sports memorabilia auction industry - so hard that in its glowing self-appraisal, SCP Auctions had to drop its before-the-fact claim that Barry Bonds' 762nd home run was "expected to draw bids approaching $1 million."
Oops.
The auction closed Saturday night with a top bid of $376,612. That's a nice windfall for 24-year-old Jameson Sutton, a Colorado Rockies fan who will use the money for medical expenses as his stepfather battles cancer.
But you have to wonder how much the experts know about the market if they're going to overestimate so wildly. (On the other hand, the Giants themselves did sign Barry Zito.)
